Why we wash our hands

In 5th and 6th class we carried out an experiment during Science Week.

We used a fresh sliced pan, zip lock bags and some germs! We put 1 slice of bread into a zip lock bag using a glove so that it remained untouched, the remainder of the slices of bread were ‘rubbed’ on or by something. We used: unwashed hands; hands washed with soap and water for 20 seconds (as recommended by WHO); cleaned correctly using hand sanitizer; rubbed on our classroom door handle; rubbed on the hand sanitizer pump.

We had to wait for a few days for the results to show. The bread was placed in their own individual zip lock bags and kept in a warm room (over the radiator in our classroom).

The pictures below show the results. We were really shocked!!
