Scoil Naomh Iosef Celebrates 60 Years

In December, a special celebration to mark the 60th year of primary education in the current location in Dromcollogher was held. Built in 1959, the boys and girls sides of the schools amalgamated in 1991. It was a wonderful celebration where many past pupils recalled their school days fondly. It was a highlight to have so many past members of staff join us on the night, including two former principals Mr. David Browne and Mrs. Eileen Twomey. The current pupils created wonderful displays including a Walk Down Memory Lane photo gallery , a timeline of events in the world and nationally in 1959 as well as recording in writing the memories of former pupils which will serve as a wonderful record of our school in years to come. Our thanks to Fr. O’Dea for celebrating mass on the night, thanks to those who participated in the mass and thanks to John Cregan, Chairman of the Board of Management who recalled his own happy school days in Scoil Naomh Iosef. We issued an appeal a number of months previously for old photographs and we received a wonderful response. These pictures gave the children lots of enjoyment- recognising familiar faces, comparing and contrasting the clothes, the hair styles and the physical building with how we know it today. We hope all in attendance enjoyed the occasion as much as staff and students.
