Something fishy is going on!!

Our school is currently working towards earning our 8th Green Flag for actions to improve the environment. The theme of this Green Flag is the Marine Environment. It starts with actions in the classroom, expands to the school and then to the wider community. It is about recognising the importance of our marine habitats and highlighting what actions we can take to reduce pollution that is having an effect on the marine environment.

Oceans cover 70% of the Earth, account for 97% of the water on our planet and produce over 50% of the oxygen in the atmosphere. It is estimated that 11 million tonnes of plastic waste ends up in the ocean  every year.

A main focus of our actions in Scoil Naomh Iosef centre on recycling and reducing our use of plastic. We have an orange Return bin in school and pupils are welcome to return plastic bottles with the return logo in this bin. We also accept used batteries for recycling in aid of Barretstown.

On Wednesday February 19th we will have a Day of Action for the marine environment in school. We invite pupils to go non-uniform and dress up with an ocean theme in mind.….pupils can wear blue or green, or create an outfit using recycled materials.
